Gutters and downspouts carry roof water away from the house. When they're clogged, damaged or missing, or the downspouts let water out right next to the foundation, that water ends up against the house and in the crawl space or basement.
Downspouts draining too close to the house is the single most common roof-system finding in recent HomeCloud evaluations, and one of the least expensive to fix. NC State guidance is to let downspout water out at least 6 feet from a foundation with a basement, and at least 2 feet from one with a crawl space or slab.
