This is ironic as Durham initially grew as a city due to its thriving tobacco industry. When that industry declined, Durham reinvented itself by focusing on the education and health sectors. In recent years, downtown Durham has been completely revitalized and residential real estate prices have increased. The tallest building in Durham, One City Center, is 27 floors and was just completed in 2018. One of the newest additions to the area is the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC), a $48 million theatre that was added in 2008 and hosts over 200 shows a year. The theatre has hosted concerts and Broadway plays such as Hamilton and Les Miserables. One thing to get excited about is that Top Golf just kicked off the development of a new venue projected to open between Durham and Raleigh in the Summer of 2022.
