Outdoor AC unit repair cost

Replacing refrigerant line insulation, clearing debris, leveling the unit and sealing where the lines enter the house.

The outdoor unit of an air conditioner or heat pump (often called the condenser) moves heat out of the home. It needs open space around it to breathe, a level pad to sit on, and insulated refrigerant lines running to the equipment inside.

Most findings at the outdoor unit are small fixes. Torn or missing foam on the refrigerant line is one of the most common HVAC findings in recent HomeCloud evaluations.

What affects the price

Simple fix or technician work
Clearing debris or replacing foam insulation is quick. Straightening a damaged coil or anything involving refrigerant needs an HVAC technician.
The pad
A unit that has sunk can often be shimmed level. A broken or badly settled pad may need replacing.
Access
Units in tight side yards, behind fences or on roofs take longer to work on.

Common questions

How much space should be around the outdoor unit?

Check the unit's manual for the clearance its maker recommends. In general, keep plants, fences and stored items back from all sides and leave the top open.
