HVAC repair and service cost
Fixing a furnace or AC that isn't heating or cooling, odd noises, servicing, and furnace venting and gas safety.
A furnace that won't heat or an AC that won't cool usually needs a technician to find the cause first. Many problems come down to one failed part, and the price depends on what that part is.
This page also covers smaller safety items found around the furnace, like a flue pipe touching wood or a loose electrical conduit at the unit. If the system is old and the repair is large, compare it with replacing the system.

What HomeCloud reports priced this fix at in homes we evaluated Sep 2025 to Oct 2026. The range is the middle half of homes; the middle price is the median. Your price comes from a written estimate for your home. Repairs for a furnace or AC that isn't heating or cooling were too rare in the sample to show a range, and the price depends on what the technician finds.
What affects the price
- What's wrong
- A technician has to find the cause before anything is fixed. A failed part found quickly costs less than a problem that takes time to track down.
- The part
- Small parts like a capacitor or igniter cost far less than a blower motor, a control board or a compressor.
- Age and brand
- Parts for older or less common systems can be harder to find and cost more.
- Refrigerant
- If an AC is low on refrigerant, there's usually a leak to find and fix before it's refilled. Older systems use refrigerants that cost more.
If you smell gas
Leave the home and call your gas company or 911 from outside. Don't flip switches or use anything that could make a spark until the gas company says it's safe.
Common questions
Why does my AC run but not cool?
Common causes include a dirty filter, a blocked or dirty outdoor unit, low refrigerant or a failed part. Start by checking the filter. If that's not it, a technician diagnoses the system.
Does an HVAC system need regular service?
A yearly tune-up for the heating and the cooling helps the system run efficiently and catches small problems early. Change the filter between visits.
