Fireplace repair cost
Fixing gas fireplaces that won't light, cleaning creosote, repairing fireboxes, dampers and screens.
Gas fireplaces most often need a fix when they won't light. Wood-burning fireplaces need the flue kept clean of creosote, the tar-like buildup from smoke, along with a sound firebox and a working damper.
Problems with the chimney structure itself are covered in the roof guides.

What affects the price
- Gas or wood
- Gas fireplaces need a technician for the valve, igniter and gas supply. Wood-burning fireplaces need a chimney sweep and sometimes a mason.
- The part
- A worn igniter or sensor costs less than a gas valve or a new insert.
- Masonry work
- Small firebox cracks can be patched. Large cracks or a failing firebox are bigger repairs.
- Cleaning first
- A dirty flue is cleaned before it can be checked properly.
Before you light a wood fire
If you don't know when the chimney was last cleaned, have a chimney sweep clean and inspect it before you use the fireplace.
