Air filter, vent and thermostat fixes

Replacing air filters, fixing return grilles and registers, and securing thermostats.

The air filter is the simplest part of the system to look after, and a dirty filter is one of the most common HVAC findings in recent HomeCloud evaluations. A clogged filter makes the system work harder and can leave rooms less comfortable.

This page also covers loose or broken vent grilles, blocked return vents and loose thermostats.

What affects the price

Filter size and type
Thicker, higher-grade filters cost more than thin basic ones.
How many returns
Homes with several return vents or two systems have more filters to change.
Where the filter sits
A filter in a ceiling return or in the attic unit takes more time than one in a wall grille.

Common questions

How often should I change the air filter?

Check it every month and change it when it looks gray or dusty. The packaging says how often that type of filter should be changed. Pets and renovation dust mean changing it more often.

Where is my air filter?

Usually behind a return vent grille on a wall or ceiling, or in a slot at the indoor unit.
