Most whole-house or multi-room interior painting jobs HomeCloud completes cost $5,800 to $9,800. A single room or part of a room usually runs $550 to $1,900. Where your job lands depends mostly on how much you paint, the condition of the walls and how big a color change you're making.

Small spots, nail pops and cracks are usually fixed with a patch and touch-up rather than a full repaint.

What affects the price

How much you paint
Walls only costs less than walls, ceilings, trim and doors together. Each surface is its own work.
Room size and ceiling height
Bigger rooms and tall or vaulted ceilings take more paint, more time and taller ladders.
Wall condition
Holes, cracks, nail pops and peeling paint are repaired and primed before the finish coats go on.
Color change
Going from a dark color to a light one, or the other way, often takes a primer coat or an extra coat.
Furniture and belongings
Full rooms take longer to move, cover and protect than empty ones.
Paint and sheen
Better paint costs more per gallon. Shinier finishes show flaws more, so the walls may need more prep.

When painting pays off

Before you sell: buyers judge a home in the first few minutes. Scuffed walls, dated colors and patched spots make a house look like it needs work, even when it doesn't. Neutral, fresh paint helps a home photograph well and show well. For help with sheens and colors, see choosing interior paint.

When you move in: the easiest time to paint is before your furniture arrives. Empty rooms are faster to prep and paint, so the same work usually costs less now than it will once you're settled in. Fresh paint also makes a house feel like yours, and a primer coat helps seal in smells like smoke or pets before the new color goes on. If HomeCloud evaluated the home before you bought it, your report already lists the walls and ceilings that need repair, so the painting estimate can include them.

Fix the walls before you paint

Paint shows everything underneath it. Hairline cracks, nail pops, peeling drywall tape and old water stains come right back through a new coat if they're painted over. See drywall cracks and nail pops for which cracks are normal, and drywall and ceiling repair for what the repairs cost.

If a stain came from a leak, we find out whether the leak is still active before we paint. Painting over an active leak only hides it for a while.

How HomeCloud does it

  1. 1

    Evaluate and photograph

We document each room's walls, ceilings and trim with photos, including cracks, stains and damage that need repair before painting.

  2. 2

    Scope and price each room

You get a priced project for each room in your MyHomeCloud portal, so you can choose exactly what you want done.

  3. 3

    Patch and prep

Cracks, nail pops and loose tape are repaired, stains are primed, and floors and furniture are protected.

  4. 4

    Paint and walk through

Walls, ceilings and trim are painted to the agreed scope, and the work is checked with you before it's closed out.

Common questions

Do I have to paint the whole house?

No. HomeCloud prices each room as its own project, so you can choose one room, a few rooms or the whole house.

Is patching included?

Standard prep is included: filling nail holes, small cracks and nail pops, and priming spots that need it. Larger drywall or water damage repairs are priced as their own projects so you can see exactly what they cost.

Can you match my existing paint?

In most cases, yes, if we know the brand and color or can match a sample. Paint also changes color and sheen as it ages, so a small touch-up on older paint can stand out. When a match isn't possible, we paint the full wall corner to corner so the color is even and the repair doesn't show.

Is sales tax charged on painting?

In North Carolina, painting interior rooms or the outside of the house is not taxed as a repair service. Painting that is part of a repair, like touching up after a drywall patch, can be. See how sales tax works on home repairs.

Does HomeCloud paint cabinets and vanities?

Yes. The completed-job prices above include kitchen cabinet and bathroom vanity painting. For cabinet and countertop repairs, see cabinet, vanity and countertop repairs.

Can I pay over time?

HomeCloud isn't a lender, but some clients use outside financing for bigger projects. See financing options.
