Door repair cost
Fixing doors that won't close or latch, weather stripping, locks and hardware, and the door between the garage and the house.
Door findings are some of the most common, and least expensive, items in HomeCloud reports: doors that don't latch, worn weather stripping, loose hardware, missing door stoppers.
The door between the garage and the house gets its own attention. It should close on its own and be fire-rated, to help keep a garage fire from spreading into the home.

What affects the price
- Adjust or replace
- Most door problems are fixed by adjusting hinges, latches and strike plates. Replacing a door costs much more.
- Fire-rated doors
- A fire-rated door costs more than a standard door, and it's hung with hardware that lets it close on its own.
- Door size and style
- Standard sizes are stocked. Odd sizes, glass doors and custom styles take longer and cost more.
- Hardware
- Locks, deadbolts and handles range widely in price depending on the brand and finish.
- Paint and finish
- A new or repaired door usually needs paint or stain to match the others.
Common questions
What is a double-keyed lock, and why replace it?
A double-keyed deadbolt needs a key on both sides. In a fire or other emergency, you may not be able to find the key to get out. A deadbolt with a thumb turn inside fixes that.
Why does the garage door to the house need to close on its own?
A door that closes by itself and is fire-rated helps keep a fire that starts in the garage from spreading into the house. A door left open, or one that isn't fire-rated, does neither.
