The most common appliance finding in HomeCloud evaluations is a range without an anti-tip bracket: it came up in 30% of the homes. The bracket is a small metal piece that keeps the range from tipping forward if someone leans or stands on the open oven door. It's a quick, low-cost fix.

Burners or oven elements that don't heat are the next most common range repair.

What affects the price

Gas or electric
Electric ranges have heating elements that can usually be swapped. Gas ranges have burners, igniters and a gas connection to check.
Parts
Elements, knobs and glass cooktops are made for a specific make and model, and some take time to order.
Repair or replace
A cracked glass cooktop or a failed control board can cost a large share of a new range. On an older range, replacing it may make more sense.

Common questions

Do I really need an anti-tip bracket?

Yes. New freestanding ranges come with one, but it's often left off when a range is installed or moved. Without it, the weight of an open oven door with something, or someone, on it can tip the range forward.
