Radon testing and mitigation cost
Radon tests, longer follow-up tests, and radon mitigation systems.
Radon is a radioactive gas that comes up from the ground. You can't see or smell it, and the only way to know a home's level is to test. The EPA recommends fixing a home at 4.0 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) or higher, and considering it between 2.0 and 4.0. See radon test results explained.
A short test gives a quick reading. A longer test, run over several months, gives a better picture of the year-round level. When levels are high, a mitigation system pulls radon from under the house with a fan and vents it outside above the roof.

What affects the price
- Foundation type
- Basements, slabs and crawl spaces each need a different setup. Crawl spaces usually need a sealed plastic barrier over the ground first.
- Pipe route
- Running the vent pipe through the house can cost more than running it up the outside wall, but it's out of sight.
- Fan and power
- The system's fan runs all the time and needs an outlet or its own circuit.
- Follow-up test
- A test after the system is running shows it's working.
Common questions
Is a radon level between 2.0 and 4.0 a problem?
It's below the EPA's action level, but the EPA suggests considering a fix in that range. Many homeowners run a longer test first to see whether the level holds up over time.
Can I pay for a mitigation system over time?
Some homeowners use financing for bigger repairs. See financing options.
