GFCI outlet installation cost

Adding GFCI protection near water, fixing GFCI outlets that don't trip, and protecting outlets that have no ground.

A GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) shuts off power in a fraction of a second when it senses electricity leaking where it shouldn't, such as through a person standing near water. Missing GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages and outdoors is the most common electrical finding in recent HomeCloud evaluations.

GFCI protection can come from a GFCI outlet, which has test and reset buttons, or from a GFCI breaker in the panel. One GFCI outlet can also protect other outlets wired after it on the same circuit.

What affects the price

How many outlets
The price grows with the number of outlets or circuits that need protection.
Outlet or breaker
A GFCI breaker in the panel can protect a whole circuit. Which is better depends on how the circuits are laid out.
Box size
GFCI outlets are bulkier than standard outlets. In a small or crowded box, the box may need to be replaced.
Grounding
Where there's no ground wire, an electrician can often install a GFCI outlet to add shock protection instead of running a new ground.

Common questions

How do I test a GFCI outlet?

Press the TEST button. The power to the outlet should cut off, and pressing RESET should bring it back. If nothing happens when you press TEST, the outlet isn't protecting you and should be replaced.

Some of my outlets stopped working. Is it a GFCI?

Often, yes. A tripped GFCI outlet cuts power to every outlet wired after it, and it can be in another room, the garage or outside. Look for one with a tripped RESET button before calling an electrician.
